Hideki Kamiya urges Capcom to add non-scary mode to Resident Evil

Hideki Kamiya, the director of the original Resident Evil 2, has publicly urged Capcom to implement accessibility options that allow players to reduce the level of terror in future titles. Speaking in an interview with VGC, Kamiya stated he is “one hundred percent serious” about the proposal, suggesting a mode that would allow sensitive players to enjoy the narrative without extreme horror elements.

Kamiya noted that he was unable to finish Resident Evil Requiem due to the intense visual horror made possible by modern photorealistic graphics. He argued that Capcom’s development teams have become “numb” to the frightening nature of their own creations because they are constantly exposed to the same jump scares and intense scenes during the production process.

His suggestion includes an optional setting rather than a fundamental change to the core game. He proposed creative ways to soften the atmosphere, such as replacing blood with cherry blossom petals, using more pleasant lighting, or even making zombies appear less threatening, similar to the accessibility adjustments found in the Bayonetta series.
