Hideki Matsuyama Leads Japanese Field at Wyndham Championship

The PGA Tour’s regular‑season finale, the Wyndham Championship, opened on June 6 at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina with an $8.5 million purse. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup points list after the event will earn a spot in next week’s first playoff tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Four Japanese golfers entered: Hideki Matsuyama, Ryo Kutsune, Takumi Kanaya and Kensho Hirata. Matsuyama posted a 65 (1 eagle, 5 birdies, 2 bogeys) to sit tied for 11th place after the first round. Kutsune recorded a 73, placing him 133rd, while Kanaya and Hirata were further down the leaderboard. The tournament also featured a strong field of international players competing for the final FedEx Cup positions.
