Hideo Kojima criticizes social media's impact on public perception

Video game creator Hideo Kojima has addressed how social media platforms can distort reality and foster unverified collective opinions. During a conversation with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, Kojima cited the reception of his 2019 game, Death Stranding, as a primary example of this phenomenon.

Kojima noted that many individuals labeled the game a ‘walking simulator’ despite never having played it. He expressed concern that such labels become accepted as shared truths without personal verification. The discussion, held in conjunction with the Japanese release of Iñárritu’s film Digger, touched upon how algorithms and social networks amplify false information and fragment a shared sense of reality.

Iñárritu echoed these concerns, noting that online discourse often focuses on surrounding narratives rather than the actual artistic work, leading to strong opinions from those who have not experienced the media firsthand.
