Hidroituango reservoir level authorized to increase amid El Niño risk

The National Authority of Environmental Licenses (ANLA) has granted temporary authorization for the Hidroituango hydroelectric project to increase its reservoir level from 408 meters to 420 meters above sea level. This measure is a preventive response to the anticipated strengthening of the El Niño phenomenon during 2026 and 2027.

Minister of Environment Fabio Arjona stated that the decision follows technical evaluations of the Cauca River's water dynamics. The primary objective is to maximize water storage before the onset of critical dry months to ensure energy generation capacity when river flows decrease. The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) has warned of a high probability of a prolonged and severe dry season.

The authorization is strictly temporary and subject to continuous monitoring. Authorities noted that the operation may be modified or suspended immediately if risks arise regarding water quality, ecosystem impacts, community concerns, or geotechnical and hydraulic stability.
