HIFK suffers derby loss to Jokerit amid coaching criticism

Jokerit defeated HIFK 3–2 in overtime during the first Stadin derby of the SM-liiga season at Veikkaus-areena. While HIFK managed to secure one point through the efforts of goalkeeper Hugo Alnefelt and attacker Daniel Mäkiaho, the performance drew heavy criticism.

Hockey expert Tony Salmelainen noted that the match exposed persistent issues within HIFK, stating that the team lacks a clear foundation for improvement under head coach Olli Jokinen. Salmelainen observed that while HIFK relies on physicality, it lacks the organized team play necessary for long-term success. In contrast, Jokerit, led by relatively inexperienced coach Juuso Hahl, appeared more organized and better able to utilize player strengths.
