High Blood Pressure: Four Drinks to Avoid

Health experts advise people with high blood pressure to limit or eliminate certain beverages. Alcoholic drinks such as wine, beer and spirits can cause a biphasic effect, initially lowering blood pressure but later raising it, contributing to long‑term hypertension. Sugary drinks—including sodas, sports and energy drinks, sweetened teas and fruit juices—add empty calories, promote weight gain and inflammation, and have been linked to modest but consistent increases in arterial pressure.

Caffeine intake may cause a short‑term, reversible rise in blood pressure; most individuals experience only a temporary effect, though those sensitive to caffeine should monitor consumption or choose decaffeinated options. Grapefruit juice interacts with more than 85 medications, potentially causing dangerous side effects, and is therefore recommended to be avoided unless cleared by a physician. Safer alternatives such as plain water, infused water or herbal teas are suggested to help manage blood pressure effectively.
