High Blood Pressure Patients Warned Against Salted Pork
Health experts caution that frequent consumption of salted pork, which is high in sodium, can make blood pressure harder to control for people with hypertension and increase the risk of cardiovascular and kidney complications. The World Health Organization advises adults to limit salt intake to under 5 g per day; about 100 g of salted pork already provides more than half of that limit.
Dr Huỳnh Tấn Vũ, a senior physician at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, recommends that hypertensive patients avoid foods rich in sodium such as salted pork, smoked meat and other processed meats. Excessive salt can cause fluctuating blood pressure, fluid retention, dizziness, headaches and strain the kidneys, while the saturated fat in salted pork may accelerate atherosclerosis.
