High Court hearing begins over injunction sought by unnamed celebrity

A High Court judge in London has opened a two-day trial regarding an injunction sought by a well-known public figure, identified in court proceedings by the pseudonym “PPT”. The individual is seeking to permanently block The Guardian and Independent Television News (ITN) from publishing allegations of sexual misconduct.

The claimant denies the allegations, which involve claims that he used his celebrity status to pursue sexual relationships with numerous girls and young women over several years. His legal team argues that publication would “highly likely lead him to commit suicide,” citing two previous suicide attempts in May and July that resulted in hospitalization. They contend that the disclosure would violate his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to life and privacy.

ITN and Guardian News and Media are opposing the injunction, arguing that the allegations are matters of significant public interest. ITN has stated its investigation includes more than 30 firsthand accounts. Mr Justice Nicklin has warned the press and the public against speculating on the identity of “PPT,” noting that online commentary attempting to name specific individuals must be disregarded to ensure a fair trial.
