High-dose influenza vaccine reduces hospitalizations in seniors with respiratory disease

Analysis of two large randomized trials conducted in Denmark and Spain indicates that high-dose influenza vaccines reduce hospitalizations for influenza or pneumonia by 8.8% in individuals over 65 with chronic respiratory diseases compared to standard-dose vaccines. The findings, presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Barcelona, involved 466,320 participants, including 31,976 with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema.

Researchers also observed a reduction in hospitalizations for other causes among this subgroup. While previous studies suggested general benefits for the elderly, these results provide specific randomized evidence regarding protection against severe forms of illness in patients with chronic lung diseases.

General guidance for seasonal influenza vaccination emphasizes its importance for high-risk groups, including the elderly, children over six months, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic cardiac or metabolic conditions. Vaccination is recommended ahead of seasonal peaks to allow the immune system time to develop a response.
