High-fiber foods for digestive health and nutrient intake

Dietary fiber is essential for digestive health and can assist in regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Adults generally require between 21 and 38 grams of fiber daily, depending on age and sex.

Several foods offer high fiber content, including green peas, chia seeds, lentils, oats, and leafy greens like kale or spinach. For example, 160 grams of cooked green peas provide approximately 8.8 grams of fiber, while 28 grams of chia seeds contain about 9.8 grams. Lentils are particularly notable, with 198 grams of cooked lentils providing roughly 15.6 grams of fiber and 18 grams of protein.

Flaxseed is highlighted as an affordable and effective option for supporting regular bowel movements due to its ability to absorb water and increase intestinal volume. However, nutritionists warn that consuming flaxseed without adequate fluid intake can reduce its effectiveness or cause bloating and discomfort. To maximize benefits, it is recommended to consume flaxseed alongside sufficient water and incorporate it into meals like yogurt, kefir, or oatmeal.
