High heels may increase risk of hemorrhoids, doctor warns

General Surgery Specialist Dr. Atıf Tekin has warned that wearing high-heeled shoes can alter body balance and potentially increase the risk of hemorrhoids. According to Dr. Tekin from Medipol Mega University Hospital, high heels shift the body's center of gravity forward, causing an increase in the lumbar curve and tilting the pelvic region forward.

This postural change places extra pressure on the pelvic floor muscles. The resulting increase in intra-abdominal pressure can hinder venous return, which may lead to the swelling and sagging of hemorrhoids over time. While high heels are not the sole cause of the condition, they can act as a significant trigger, especially when combined with other risk factors such as genetic predisposition, a sedentary lifestyle, and a diet low in fiber.
