High Overweight Prevalence in Germany Linked to Popular Low‑Fat Dairy Choices

Skyr, an Icelandic dairy product with 0.2% fat and high protein, has entered German supermarkets and is marketed as a low‑calorie, calcium‑rich alternative to yoghurt and quark. Alongside cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt, it is promoted for weight‑control and athletic nutrition.

A recent Kantar Group survey of 9,611 German adults (July 2024‑June 2025) found that 59% are overweight or obese, despite 49% believing they eat healthier. While many consumers seek “light”, “bio” or “protein‑rich” labels, only about one‑third deliberately purchase high‑protein foods. The data suggest a gap between health‑focused product labels and actual dietary impact, with such products often perceived as calorie‑free even when they may contribute to excess energy intake.

The study also highlights lifestyle factors: 72% of Germans exercise occasionally, yet a third replace meals with snacks, and time pressure and stress alter traditional eating patterns. Comparisons note the U.S. obesity rate at 42.5%, double Germany’s 25% obesity share.
