High protein diets may cause kidney strain, experts warn

Medical experts are warning that long-term high-protein diets, often used for muscle building and weight management, can place excessive strain on the kidneys. While protein is essential, the body cannot store excess amounts like it does with carbohydrates or fats.

When protein intake exceeds requirements, the body breaks down the surplus, creating metabolic byproducts such as urea. The kidneys must then work harder to filter and excrete these substances through urine. This increased workload is particularly dangerous for individuals who already have underlying kidney function issues.

Dr. Uma Darji notes that the kidneys are vital for filtering waste, maintaining mineral and acid balance, and regulating blood pressure. Because early-stage kidney disease often progresses silently without obvious symptoms, individuals may feel healthy even as their renal function declines.
