High-protein products expand across French supermarket shelves

High-protein products are increasingly prevalent in French supermarkets, expanding from niche fitness markets to mainstream consumer goods. Major retailers such as Carrefour, Auchan, Super U, and Picard have launched their own ranges, including protein-enriched yogurts, breads, and shakes. Market data shows significant growth, with high-protein yogurt volumes increasing by 63% in a single year and sales of high-protein yogurts jumping 77% over three years.

While 81% of French consumers believe a high-protein diet is important for health, experts warn of “protein washing.” Many of these enriched products are ultra-processed and may contain unnecessary additives, sugars, or fats. Nutritional experts suggest that protein needs can often be met through simple, whole foods such as eggs, legumes, and canned options like tuna, salmon, sardines, or crab, which provide essential nutrients like omega-3s and vitamins without the processing found in specialized retail products.
