France protests: Student clashes and public sector strikes intensify

France is experiencing widespread unrest as student-led protests over education conditions and nationwide public sector strikes converge. High school students have been blocking school entrances and clashing with police in cities including Paris, Lille, Nantes, Marseille, and Lyon. The demonstrations cite overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and inadequate resources as primary grievances. Authorities report that approximately 400 schools have been affected by these actions.

Simultaneously, approximately 300,000 civil servants, including teachers, firefighters, and healthcare workers, participated in nationwide strikes to demand higher wages and better working conditions. These labor actions coincide with growing opposition to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s proposed 54 billion euro fiscal adjustment and plans to freeze state employee base salaries in 2027.

Clashes between protesters and law enforcement have resulted in significant casualties. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that at least 440 people have been detained, many of whom are minors. The clashes have left 48 law enforcement officers and at least 10 teachers, along with several students, injured. Police have utilized tear gas and batons to disperse crowds, while some protesters reportedly used projectiles and hydrochloric acid.
