High school volleyball expands across Maine

High school volleyball is experiencing significant growth across various regions of Maine. Since the Maine Principals’ Association first sponsored the sport in 1997, the competition has expanded from two classes in 2010 to four classes as of last fall. Currently, 52 teams are competing statewide.

The sport has seen particular success in Downeast Maine, including Washington and Hancock counties, as well as in southern counties such as York and Cumberland. Washington Academy has recently secured two consecutive Class B state titles.

However, the growth has not been uniform across the state. Central Maine, specifically Kennebec, Somerset, and Franklin counties, shows much lower participation. Coaches suggest that schools in these central regions often prioritize field hockey and soccer programs over adding volleyball.
