High-security prisoners transferred in Peru and escaped in Paraguay

In Peru, seven high-risk inmates were transferred by land from the Ancón 1 penitentiary in Lima to the Challapalca prison in the Tacna region. The group includes members of the criminal organization ‘La Confederación,’ accused of extortion, as well as individuals linked to murders and extortion of transport workers. The transfer followed an intelligence operation at Ancón 1 where authorities seized drugs, weapons, mobile phones, and a Wi-Fi router hidden in a cell ceiling. The move to the high-altitude facility in Tacna has faced local opposition due to security concerns.

In Paraguay, two high-security inmates, Éver Alejandro Ozuna López and Robert Arsenio Merlo Villalba, escaped from the Martín Mendoza Penitentiary in Emboscada. According to Vice Minister of Criminal Policy Rubén Maciel, the prisoners cut through window bars and used ropes made from sheets and blankets to scale the internal and perimeter walls. The escape was not detected for approximately six hours after the inmates exited their cell.
