High sodium and trans fats identified as major cardiovascular risks

Health experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) are highlighting two specific food groups that may pose greater risks to cardiovascular health than fatty meats: highly processed foods with high salt content and industrial products containing trans fats.

Excessive sodium intake can lead to water retention, contributing to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart damage, myocardial infarction, and stroke. It also places a significant burden on kidney function. Experts recommend that adults consume less than 5 grams of salt per day, which is approximately one teaspoon, including salt from all dietary sources.

Sodium is often hidden in processed items such as instant noodles, sausages, canned goods, fast food, and various sauces. To mitigate these risks, health professionals suggest reducing added seasonings, reading nutritional labels, and prioritizing fresh foods, vegetables, and fruits.
