High-speed rail failure strands passengers in Asturias
A major electrical failure on the high-speed rail line connecting Asturias and Madrid caused significant disruption for hundreds of passengers on Monday. The incident originated from a lack of tension in the catenary cables, affecting the route between León and Campomanes.
One specific train departing Gijón at approximately 6:00 a.m. became stranded on a viaduct near Campomanes for five hours. The convoy carried 368 passengers, including individuals with reduced mobility. Due to the height and location of the viaduct, road access for rescue vehicles and buses was restricted, complicating evacuation efforts.
Passengers reported being stuck without adequate lighting or the ability to charge electronic devices as power was conserved. The delay caused missed connections, including flights and professional meetings. Adif and Renfe worked to resolve the issue, with plans involving towing the convoy to Campomanes station to facilitate transfers.
