High Tatras rescuers respond to first avalanche of the season
Mountain rescuers in the High Tatras have completed their first avalanche intervention of the new season. On Monday morning, emergency services received a request for help involving two tourists near Dlhý ples.
The incident occurred in Krčmár Gorge after the pair deviated from the marked trail while attempting to climb the Poľský hrebeň ridge. A small avalanche triggered above them; while the tourists were not buried, an 18-year-old Czech man suffered injuries to his thigh and pelvis due to falling onto rocky terrain.
Due to poor weather conditions, rescuers could not deploy a helicopter and instead utilized two ground teams. After receiving first aid and analgesics, the injured man was transported via stretcher to Sliezsky dom for further medical treatment before being transferred to emergency medical services in Tatranská Polianka.
Mountain rescue services have issued a warning that despite it being autumn, conditions in higher altitudes are winter-like. They advise hikers to carry appropriate equipment, such as crampons, poles, or ice axes, and to plan trips based on current weather warnings and personal abilities.
