Higher education institutions develop policies for generative AI integration

Educational institutions are working to address the rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) through new policies and literacy initiatives. The University of Oregon is developing a structured approach to AI use, guided by 18 strategic recommendations from its AI Council. These recommendations focus on establishing consistent university standards for acknowledging AI use, enhancing faculty training, and integrating AI into the curriculum while protecting academic integrity.

On a broader scale, research indicates a significant gap between the adoption of GenAI and institutional preparedness. An international survey of over 1,200 university students and postdoctoral fellows in the medical and life sciences revealed that while more than 80% have used GenAI tools, most have received no formal training and many are unaware of institutional policies. Experts suggest that research-performing organizations must embed GenAI literacy as a core competency to help students recognize bias and inaccuracies, ensuring that the use of these tools upholds scientific and academic standards.
