Higher education leaders see increased trust from students amid rising scrutiny

New survey data from the Lumina Foundation and Gallup indicates that 55% of students believe their school’s leadership typically makes decisions in their best interests. While the higher education sector has faced long-standing public perception challenges, students appear to show higher trust in campus-led solutions to their challenges compared to state or federal policies. Four out of five students reported trusting campus-led solutions more than government-driven ones.

Despite this, institutions face increasing pressure due to heightened political scrutiny and the rapid spread of misinformation via social media and generative AI. Current communications strategies are being challenged by the need to manage reputations more proactively, as campus incidents can now escalate into national stories within hours. Effective institutional management now requires engaging a broader audience, including community leaders and regional employers, rather than focusing solely on alumni and faculty.
