Congo and Morocco face education sector strikes

In the Republic of the Congo, approximately 12,000 community teachers are threatening to strike in early October. The educators, who serve from preschool to high school but are not yet integrated into the civil service, report ten months of unpaid scholarship arrears dating back to 2024. The Coalition of Community Teacher Structures of Congo (CSECC) is demanding the immediate payment of at least four months of arrears to ensure a peaceful start to the school year.

In Morocco, higher education officials and unions have announced significant industrial action. Three major unions representing university staff have organized a boycott of the academic year through September 14. This is to be followed by two 72-hour national strikes scheduled for September 8–10 and September 15–17. The protesters are demanding the publication of a specific status for higher education civil servants, salary increases, and exemptions from university registration fees for sector employees.
