Highland Valley Copper workers issue 72-hour strike notice
United Steelworkers Local 7619 has issued a 72-hour strike notice at Teck Resources’ Highland Valley Copper mine near Logan Lake, British Columbia. The decision follows a unanimous strike mandate from 944 participating union members.
Negotiations reached an impasse on Tuesday, October 20, after the company presented a revised monetary offer and withdrew one concession. Despite these changes, the union stated the proposal still falls short of membership expectations. USW Local 7619 President Kyle Wolff noted that members are prepared to stand up for a contract that recognizes their contributions, citing concerns regarding wages, pensions, and the ability to retain skilled workers.
Highland Valley Copper is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine. While the strike notice increases union leverage, the union remains available to continue bargaining during the notice period. Teck Resources management expressed a commitment to reaching a fair and responsible collective agreement.
