Highlands workforce initiatives launch to support STEM and energy sectors

New initiatives have launched in the Highlands to strengthen the regional workforce and support the energy transition.

The Industry Connect Highland programme, developed through My Highland Future and Workforce North, will run during the 2026/27 academic year. Focusing initially on STEM, the partnership connects secondary schools with employers in the engineering, infrastructure, and construction sectors. The programme aims to co-design curriculum-linked learning through workshops, site visits, and industry challenges to help students make informed career choices.

Simultaneously, NU-Horizon Training has launched in Easter Ross to address skills needs in the renewables and energy sectors. Owned by UHI North, West and Hebrides and based at the former Nigg Skills Academy, the commercial company will work with employers to provide training and upskilling opportunities. The initiative is designed to ensure the Highlands and Islands can meet the workforce requirements of the wider energy transition.
