Highline Mushrooms West Limited fined for emissions violations

Highline Mushrooms West Limited has been fined $7,000 by the BC Ministry of Environment and Parks for violating air emissions regulations at its Ruby Creek location near Hope, British Columbia.

The violations occurred between May 1, 2024, and May 4, 2026. The facility failed to implement proper air emissions controls for managing ‘goody water’, the liquid waste produced during the mushroom composting process. By failing to use an enclosed system or operate under negative pressure, the facility increased the risk of spreading odours to surrounding areas, despite receiving warnings two years prior.

Highline Mushrooms West Limited operates multiple facilities in the Lower Mainland, including sites in Abbotsford and Aldergrove. The company has a history of regulatory issues, including previous fines for wastewater treatment violations at its Abbotsford farms and a $152,309 fine from WorkSafeBC in 2024 regarding first aid staffing.
