Higinio Martínez selected to lead Mexican Senate Board of Directors
The Morena party has selected Senator Higinio Martínez Miranda to preside over the Senate Board of Directors for the third year of the LXVI Legislature, effective September 1. The decision was reached through a unanimous vote among the Morena caucus, following the withdrawal of other potential candidates. The appointment has faced internal criticism from Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña, who questioned the consensus and characterized the move as 'connivance' with the opposition.
Simultaneously, Senator Enrique Inzunza has re-emerged in the Senate after a four-month absence. Inzunza, who recently announced his departure from the Morena caucus to become an independent legislator, denied all allegations of links to organized crime made by U.S. authorities. He characterized the accusations as a 'judicial war' and a political attack, requesting that the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) conclude its investigation.
Despite Inzunza's departure, Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez asserted that Morena and its allies maintain the necessary majority to pass constitutional reforms. Morena coordinator Ignacio Mier emphasized that legislative work must continue regardless of the personal or legal challenges faced by individual senators.
