Higino Carneiro challenges MPLA leadership election process in Angola

Higino Carneiro, a former general and pre-candidate for the leadership of Angola’s ruling MPLA party, has indicated he may challenge the legality of the party's internal elections. Following the rejection of his candidacy, Carneiro stated he intends to exhaust all legal resources to proceed with his bid, potentially contesting the process at the Constitutional Court to ensure internal statutes are respected.

Carneiro, who positions himself as the primary challenger to current President João Lourenço in the upcoming December congress, emphasized that his goal is to strengthen internal democracy rather than damage the party. He has submitted requests for clarification and nullity to the Constitutional Court regarding the election process.

In a broader discussion regarding the political landscape in Angola, jurist Francisco Nduli noted that while the Constitution and the Law of Political Parties provide a legal framework for the opposition, there remains an imbalance in media exposure. Nduli suggested that while the ruling party naturally attracts more attention due to its scale, opposition parties must improve their internal organization and communication strategies to better engage with the media ahead of the 2027 general elections.
