Hijo de Fishman arrested after wrestling referee dies in Mexico

A professional wrestling event in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, ended in tragedy when 75-year-old referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, known as ‘El Búho’, died following a wrestling maneuver. During a match between Hijo de Fishman and Máscara Sagrada NG, the wrestler Hijo de Fishman reportedly performed a ‘martinete’ (piledriver) on Pineda. The move, which is banned in many wrestling commissions due to the high risk of cervical and head injuries, left the referee motionless on the ring.

Authorities arrested Hijo de Fishman on suspicion of manslaughter. While some reports suggest the incident was a scripted part of the performance that went wrong, others raised concerns regarding the availability of medical personnel and the time taken to provide assistance. The wrestling promotion, El Patrón Espectáculos, expressed sadness and stated they are providing legal assistance to the wrestler.

In the wrestling community, the incident has sparked debate. Legendary figure Hijo del Santo defended the wrestler, characterizing the event as an ‘accident’ inherent to the risks of the sport. Meanwhile, local authorities in Hidalgo are conducting an investigation to determine criminal responsibility.
