Hiker found alive in Northern California after multi-day disappearance
Mary Beth Granbery, a 72-year-old hiker, was found alive on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, after being missing for several days in a remote area of Shasta County, California. Granbery had departed for a camping trip on Sept. 28 at the Cabin Creek Trailhead but failed to return as expected.
A joint search and rescue operation was launched by the Siskiyou and Shasta County Sheriff’s Offices, involving volunteers and California Highway Patrol Air Operations. The search was prompted after family members located Granbery’s camper van at a nearby trailhead on Oct. 3.
Search teams located Granbery at the bottom of a steep embankment. She had sustained significant injuries resulting from a fall and exposure to the elements. She was airlifted by CHP Air Operations to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where officials reported she was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
