Hikers face danger after relying on AI for mountain navigation
Three hikers were rescued from a treacherous rock face at Mount Shasta in California after miscalculating their fitness levels and packing insufficient supplies. The group reportedly relied on Google’s Gemini AI chatbot for their trip planning, which contributed to their poor preparation.
According to High Country News, the hikers were forced to attempt a dangerous descent in total darkness after reaching the summit at night. Nick Meyers of the US Forest Service, who assisted in the rescue, noted that the group appeared to have bypassed their own judgment in favor of the technology.
This incident is part of a growing trend of visitors using AI for outdoor planning. In British Columbia, a teenager had to be rescued from a steep ledge after using Anthropic’s Claude chatbot to plan a route. Additionally, park officials in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, reported that AI usage among visitors rose from zero to 26 percent within a single year.
