Harz Mountains tourism features historic railways and diverse hiking trails

The Harz region in Germany offers diverse outdoor experiences, ranging from historic narrow-gauge railways to extensive hiking networks. The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (HSB) operates approximately 140 kilometers of track, including the famous Brockenbahn, which transports visitors to the Brocken summit. The region is also home to the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, a prominent long-distance hiking trail spanning roughly 94 to 150 kilometers.

Beyond surface trails, the Harz features a complex underground landscape including over 170 known caves and historical mining tunnels. Notable sites include the Baumannshöhle and the Barbarossahöhle.

However, the terrain presents significant challenges for visitors. The Brocken summit experiences extreme weather, with fog or clouds present approximately 300 days a year and an average temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius. Due to unpredictable weather, steep terrain, and physical exhaustion, the Harz Mountain Rescue service reported 54 deployments in the first half of 2026, an increase from the previous year.
