Hiking industry drives 7.8 billion euro economic value in Germany

Hiking has evolved from a traditional pastime into a lifestyle-oriented activity, serving as a significant economic driver for rural regions in Germany. According to Bernd Hartmann, Managing Director of the German Hiking Association, approximately two out of three Germans aged 16 and older participate in hiking.

This trend generates an annual economic value of roughly 7.8 billion euros, benefiting local hospitality and retail sectors. In regions like the Erzgebirge, tourism operators are adapting to this demand by investing in specialized infrastructure. For example, the Basislager Fichtelberg in Oberwiesenthal, a multi-million euro development, offers amenities specifically tailored to active hikers, such as shoe dryers and wellness facilities.

Research from the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences indicates that the image of hiking has undergone a major transformation since the 1990s, moving away from a sedate activity toward a modern lifestyle choice.
