Hiking remains Switzerland's most popular sport

Hiking remains the most popular sport and physical activity in Switzerland, according to the ‘Sport Switzerland 2026’ study by the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO). Approximately 49 percent of the Swiss population participates in hiking, placing it ahead of cycling (34 percent), swimming (25 percent), and skiing or jogging (23 percent each).

While the number of people reporting hiking has decreased compared to 2020, the frequency of the activity has increased. The study also notes a stagnation in the overall sports boom, though strength training and yoga/pilates have seen significant growth. Motivations for physical activity remain centered on health and enjoyment, with 93 percent of respondents citing fitness and health as primary drivers.

In conjunction with the popularity of outdoor activities, concerns regarding environmental impact have surfaced. A study by ‘Swiss Hiking Trails’ and the Federal Roads Office identified litter as the primary grievance for hikers. In response, organizations like the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) have launched awareness campaigns to address waste management and hygiene in natural areas.
