Hildasay island in Shetland goes on the market
The uninhabited Shetland island of Hildasay has been placed on the market, with offers expected to exceed £350,000. Located off Scalloway, the 267-acre (approximately 110 hectares) site features a pier, a traditional bothy-type building, and two freshwater lochs.
The island has a historical legacy as a site for herring curing and granite quarrying, including a former railway line used to transport distinctive red-green granite.
Hildasay gained recent public attention as the lockdown home of charity adventurer and ex-paratrooper Chris Lewis and his dog, Jet. Lewis used the island during his 19,000-mile walk around the UK coast to raise £500,000 for the armed forces charity SSAFA. He later documented his experiences in the book ‘Finding Hildasay’.
