Hildon Chaves proposes infrastructure and health aid for Guajará-Mirim indigenous villages

Hildon Chaves, a candidate for the government of Rondônia representing the Federação União Progressista, has proposed expanding healthcare and infrastructure services to indigenous villages in Guajará-Mirim. The municipality hosts the state's largest indigenous population, comprising 5,473 people from 26 different ethnic groups.

Chaves aims to address critical shortages in treated water, healthcare access, and stalled school construction projects. He specifically highlighted issues in Aldeia Pedreira, where health services are limited to a single improvised room, and Laranjal, where families lack access to treated water. In Aldeia Santo André, children are currently studying in temporary sheds due to unfinished school buildings.

The 2024 drought has further isolated these communities by hindering navigation on the Pacaás River. Chaves pledged to strengthen the State Superintendency for Indigenous Affairs and work directly with communities to prioritize the placement of boats, wells, and schools. He cited his previous experience as mayor of Porto Velho, where he managed health boats and implemented telemedicine, as a model for these proposed services.
