Hildon Chaves pushes major traffic reform in Rondônia
Hildon Chaves, former mayor of Porto Velho and candidate for governor of Rondônia with the Federação União Progressistas, met with directors of the Sindicato dos Servidores do Departamento de Trânsito do Estado (SINDETRAN‑RO). He announced a comprehensive reform to transform the state traffic department (Detran) from a "revenue‑collecting" agency into a public‑policy instrument focused on prevention.
The proposal targets the 456 traffic deaths recorded in 2025 and the 3,885 accidents in the first three months of the year. Chaves said, "Our objective is to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and especially fatal victims. It is necessary to end the profile of a revenue‑collecting agency and change how we work on traffic issues." The reform outlines seven axes—health, education, development and citizenship, public safety, staff valuation, urban development, and management/modernisation. SINDETRAN‑RO president Anderson Rivero added, "When prevention works, the server wins and the population also wins."
