Hillsborough County considers ban on potent kratom compound
Hillsborough County commissioners have unanimously voted to move forward with a proposed ordinance targeting 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a chemical compound found in some kratom supplements that is significantly more potent than the natural plant.
The proposal specifically aims to restrict or ban the concentrated byproduct rather than the natural, herbal form of kratom, which remains legal in Florida for individuals aged 21 and older. The move comes amid concerns that a statewide emergency ban on 7-OH and similar synthetic products in Florida could expire next year.
During the proceedings, advocates and parents urged officials to take action, citing instances where kratom or synthetic extracts were linked to fatalities. One advocate emphasized that the herbal nature of the product does not guarantee safety, particularly when products are recommended by retail employees to consumers seeking relief from anxiety.
