Halloween safety: Road risks and community precautions

As Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, AAA and law enforcement agencies are issuing warnings regarding increased road safety risks. Motorists are advised to slow down in residential neighborhoods, as children are statistically more likely to be struck by vehicles on Halloween than on any other day. Authorities also noted concerns regarding alcohol-related crashes and the presence of pedestrians using e-bikes or e-scooters.

In various communities, local officials are increasing patrols to prevent vandalism and traffic offenses. For families, safety experts recommend that children travel in groups with adults, use flashlights, and wear reflective clothing. Additionally, parents are encouraged to inspect candy for unusual appearances or damaged packaging to prevent ingestion of unsafe items.

Community-led initiatives are also addressing specific needs, such as food-free trick-or-treating events for children with severe allergies. Some regions are hosting candy buy-back programs to repurpose excess sweets for military troops, while others are organizing organized trunk-or-treat events to provide more controlled environments for families.
