Himachal Pradesh government assures hospital will not become MLA residences

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has recorded an assurance from the state government that the Kamla Nehru State Hospital for Mother and Child in Shimla will remain dedicated to healthcare services. The government confirmed that the premises will not be converted into residential accommodations for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

The court's decision follows a Public Interest Litigation filed by Palma Chauhan regarding the future use of the hospital grounds. The infrastructure in question covers approximately 18,564.25 square metres and was constructed in 2019 at a cost of roughly Rs 20 crore.

Additionally, the proceedings highlighted space shortages at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla. Following the shifting of the Gynaecology department, officials noted that the department currently occupies 1,329.55 square metres at IGMC, with some areas still under construction.
