Himachal Pradesh issues temple SOP after Ayodhya theft allegations

The Himachal Pradesh government has introduced a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all state‑managed temples. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who also oversees the Language, Art and Culture portfolio, said the SOP is a preventive measure following the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The SOP outlines detailed operational guidelines for temple authorities, including enhanced security arrangements, stricter record‑keeping of donations and valuables, and greater accountability. Agnihotri stated, “Today we have issued a comprehensive SOP for all government‑managed temples in Himachal Pradesh… We have made the system foolproof.” The government also plans to modernise religious institutions, including the development of a digital museum, to bolster public confidence and safeguard temple assets.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the security of religious sites after reports of the Ayodhya incident, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in Himachal Pradesh.
