Himalayan construction boom puts 300,000 at risk of floods

A study published in the journal Scientific Reports reveals that approximately 300,000 people in parts of the Himalayas are living in areas vulnerable to catastrophic flooding. The risk is being compounded by rapid construction of residential areas, tourist facilities, and infrastructure in high-risk zones, alongside accelerating glacier melt.

Between 2016 and 2023, the built-up area in flood-prone regions of northern Nepal, southeastern Tibet, and the Indian state of Uttarakhand increased by roughly 45 percent. In areas specifically susceptible to glacial lake outburst floods, the expansion of built environments reached nearly 78 percent.

The research analyzed approximately 1,360 glacial lakes and areas up to 50 kilometers downstream of Himalayan rivers. Scientists warn the actual number of people at risk may be higher as the study did not include all neighboring high-risk zones. These findings follow devastating floods in Nepal, including an August event that resulted in over 1,400 deaths and subsequent flooding in October that damaged homes and bridges.
