Himalayan glacier collapse triggers deadly floods in Nepal and China

A massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas has triggered devastating floods and debris flows, impacting both Nepal and China’s Xizang autonomous region. Reports indicate that the flooding in Nepal has resulted in at least 300 deaths and hundreds of people missing. In response, Nepalese Prime Minister Balen Shah has mobilized over 13,000 security personnel from the army and police, with 573 people rescued so far.

In China, President Xi Jinping has called for intensified rescue operations following the disaster in the Xizang region. Experts suggest the event was a mixed rock and ice avalanche triggered at an altitude of approximately 4,800 meters. While specialists had previously established a cross-border warning system for Himalayan glacial lakes, the sudden nature of this avalanche caught many by surprise.

Geomorphology experts are investigating several hypotheses regarding the cause, including whether a massive landslide triggered the glacier collapse, a rockfall destabilized the glacier, or if the glacier collapsed first, subsequently pulling down the surrounding rock. The resulting flow of water, ice, and debris created a highly destructive force far more lethal than a dry rock avalanche.
