Himalayan glacier collapse triggers devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet
A massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas has triggered a devastating flood, resulting in more than 300 deaths and approximately 1,400 people missing. The event occurred on August 26, 2026, in a remote border region between Nepal and Tibet, specifically near the Langtang Lirung peak.
While seismic instruments initially interpreted the signal as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) later clarified that the signal, equivalent to a magnitude 5.2, was actually caused by the glacier collapse and a subsequent massive debris flow. The collapse involved a significant portion of a glacier at an altitude of 5,200 meters falling roughly 1,200 meters into a valley, carrying ice, rocks, and mud.
Experts suggest the disaster may have been caused by the debris temporarily blocking a river to create a dam that later burst, or by the collapse triggering a sudden release of a glacial lake. The event is being linked to broader trends of global warming, which has contributed to the melting of glaciers worldwide.
