Himalayan glacier melt increases GLOF risks for South Asia

Glacial ice loss in the Hindu Kush Himalayas has doubled since 2000, significantly increasing the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) for approximately two billion people in South Asia. Experts warn that retreating glaciers are forming moraine-dammed lakes that become increasingly unstable due to rising temperatures, landslides, and ice fragmentation.

In Nepal, recent disasters have been linked to the breaching of glacial lakes, often triggered by landslides or rock-ice avalanches. Satellite imagery and scientific assessments from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) highlight the growing instability of these high-mountain environments. Nepal currently has 2,070 glacial lakes, with 21 classified as high risk. Similar vulnerabilities exist in the Himalayan regions of China and India.

Data indicates a rising frequency of these events; for example, the Karakoram region recorded 135 GLOF events between 1900 and 2000, while the current century has already seen approximately 85. Scientists estimate that up to 65% of the region's ice mass could disappear by 2100 if current warming trends continue.
