Himalayan infrastructure and heritage projects transform regional connectivity

Significant infrastructure and heritage projects are reshaping life in the Himalayan regions of Bhutan and India.

In Bhutan, the Trans-Bhutan Trail, an ancient communication network used for over 500 years, has been restored. Under the patronage of the King of Bhutan, the project involved volunteers and experts to rebuild hundreds of kilometers of paths, 18 major bridges, and over 10,000 stone steps. The initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism and reconnect local communities to their history.

In the Ladakh-Zanskar region of northern India, the construction of the Zanskar National Highway is transforming high-altitude villages. The project, overseen by the Indian army, aims to provide access to borders near Pakistan and China while connecting isolated communities. The documentary “La Route” by Marianne Chaud highlights the human impact of this massive undertaking, following local peasants who have joined the labor force to improve connectivity and educational opportunities for their families.
