Himalayan mud avalanche bypasses monitoring systems

A mud avalanche at Gyirong Port in Shigatse, near Mount Everest, has highlighted the challenges of disaster monitoring in the Himalayas. Experts note that while China has established systems to detect seismic vibrations and water level changes, this specific event bypassed existing protocols because the disaster originated on the Nepalese side of the border.

Kang Shichang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences explained that the proximity to the border and the rapid flow of water from Nepal significantly reduced the available warning time. The incident occurred in an isolated, high-altitude valley where monitoring methods are limited. The speed of ice and rock slides in such terrain leaves a very short interval between the initial collapse and the resulting disaster. While specialists suggest glacier melting due to climate change is the most likely cause, scientific analysis is still required to confirm the exact triggers.
