Himalayan region faces rising disaster risks from climate change and construction
The Himalayan region is facing increasing ecological instability due to a combination of climate change and intensive human activity. A recent massive collapse of glacial ice, rock, and debris in Nepal has caused devastating flooding, destroying infrastructure and disrupting livelihoods across the region.
Climate-driven factors such as retreating glaciers, changing snowfall patterns, and unstable permafrost are intensifying the risk of natural hazards. These risks are compounded by large-scale construction and hydroelectric projects occurring on both sides of the borders in states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and the Northeastern regions of India.
Vikramaditya Singh, Himachal Pradesh’s Public Works Department Minister, has called for essential regional dialogue, including engagement with China, to address these shared vulnerabilities. Singh emphasized that the changing landscape and the management of emergencies are issues that concern the entire Himalayan belt rather than any single nation.
