Himalayan regions face rising climate risks from melting glaciers
Climate change is significantly altering mountain landscapes and increasing natural hazards across the Himalayan region. In Garsha, Himachal Pradesh, participants are conducting the Garsha Eco Pad Yatra, a walking journey of 15 to 18 kilometers daily to raise awareness about rapidly melting glaciers and ecosystem vulnerability. The initiative includes tree planting and trash collection to highlight the environmental and cultural shifts occurring in the valley.
In Pakistan’s Chitral district, research indicates that glaciers lost approximately 30.8% of their area between 1992 and 2022, while the number of glacial lakes rose from 101 to 162. This shift has increased the frequency of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and avalanches. Local communities report significant damage to infrastructure, with 90% of surveyed residents noting impacts on water supplies and 86% reporting damage to roads. The hazards have also led to agricultural loss, disrupted tourism, and forced displacement for many residents.
