Himalayas climate change warning issued by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s son
Jamling Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, son of the historic mountaineer Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, has issued a warning regarding the impact of climate change on the Himalayas. He noted that the region is increasingly vulnerable to disasters, such as glacial lake outbursts, which make mountaineering more dangerous and threaten populations living in lower valleys.
Sherpa highlighted a devastating event two years ago when his father’s village, Thame, was partially destroyed by a flood caused by a receding glacier. He observed that as glaciers recede, lakes rise and eventually breach, creating significant threats to mountain communities. On Mount Everest, signs of warming are already visible, with guides reporting the presence of water at Camp 2, located at approximately 6,400 meters.
The warnings coincide with the release of “Tenzing,” an Apple TV biopic that recounts the 1953 first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary.
